Imam Al-Ridha (as) said:
“The one for whom the day of Ashura is a day of tragedy, grief, and weeping, Allah The Mighty, The Glorious, shall make the Day of Judgment a day of joy and happiness for him.”
قال الرضا (ع):
مَن كان يوم عاشوراء يوم مُصيبته وحُزنه وبُكائه يجعل الله عزَّ وجل يوم القيامة يوم فرحه وسروره
— Bihar al Anwar, vol. 44, pg. 284 There are countless hasanat to be reaped in commemorating the tragedy of Allah’s beloved, but we mustn’t forget that the joy and happiness isn’t only rewarded on the Day of Judgment. There is a spiritual delight in connecting to Ahlul Bayt (as) through compassion and love. In grief there is joy, because this grief is the pain of love that burns the heart, and there is no greater joy than to be spiritually connected to the light of Ahlul Bayt (as).
Mourning over Imam Husayn (as) and his family is opening up yourself to the most profound love; it is softening the walls that harden the heart in order for it to receive the light of faith. Through tears and empathy, we draw closer to those whom we love, so how beautiful is the empathy that draws us closer to those whom Allah (swt) Loves?

We mourn Imam Husayn (as) because we love him and his family, who love us in turn. The Lord that purified them an excellent purification made the love for them an honor that will be rewarded uncountably in the hereafter as well as in this life. Alhamdulillah for the blessing and mercy of being among those who mourn Aba Abdillah (as). Truly, it’s a gift granted to the most honored of Allah’s servants.
